Mexicali: A Global Leader in Date Production
Mexicali leads in date cultivation and production, being the only city in Mexico that produces the fruit.
The date fruit is rich in iron, potassium, calcium, and an important source of fiber. Mexicali leads in date cultivation and production, being the only city in Mexico that produces the fruit. Not to mention, Mexicali is the main source of exporting to neighboring states, California and Arizona, in addition to other countries like Spain and Australia.
We spoke with Mr. Ramiro Quiroz González, President of the Date Product in Baja California, who invited us to the Seventh Edition of the “Mexicali Valley Date Fair.” This free event, which is being held November 26-28, will offer an exhibition of artisan products, food competitions, live music, and more.
“The date needs Mexicali land and the resources that come with: the desert, water, as well as the region’s extreme heat and cold temperatures,”said Quiroz González. “The land has to be particularly soft, and plenty of water is needed. In colder months the palm rests, and in hotter seasons the sugar rises.”
The Mexicali Valley is one of the largest exporters of “Medjool” dates, coming in third in the world after the United States and Israel. Over 7,000 acres are dedicated to its cultivation.
BACKGROUND
- Its name comes from the Greek word "daktilos" which translates to finger.
- Additionally, the fruit comes in several varieties: Zahid, Medjool, Kadrawi, and Sukkari.
- The fruit originates from Mesopotamia, with its cultivation dating back to more than 50 thousand years ago.
